Your habitual thoughts or beliefs are wired in your brain and primarily function through associations. Essentially, your brain is making associations because it is designed that way in order to be efficient. The strongest thoughts/beliefs are also strongly linked to emotions. You know when that song pops up on the radio, instantly a particular person comes to your mind. It’s hard wired in your brain and packaged within the emotional state of your being.
There is also faulty wiring. For example, when you hear the words, “We need to talk”. What happens? You might become defensive. Your guard is up with a faster heartbeat as you prepare for a difficult conversation.
This is where positive affirmations or mental awareness of a negative trigger becomes absolutely critical in order to change your habits. When you become aware, you take the power away, so you can remain neutral, stay in control, and retrain your brain. You are mechanically breaking an old program that no longer serves you. Just like any muscle, it takes time to visualize and practice.
The neurons that fire together; wire together. With training and practice (e.g. meditation, positive affirmations, etc.), you begin to shift your behavioral thinking and actions. Try to kick up the affirmations, say them out loud, write them down and place in your wallet, make a power yoga pose, or visual representation (paint, color, or other creative outlet).
Listen to your thoughts. Don’t be so hard on yourself and your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for it.
