Spirituality linked to longevity
A growing body of knowledge has researched the secrets to living a long life, and we have been preoccupied with watching what we eat, how much exercise did we complete, how much alcohol have we consumed; the list goes on. However, a number of other studies (JAMA Internal Medicine 2016 and PLoS One) point to spirituality and the link to longevity. Putting aside specific religions for a moment, there is a common thread or list of associated values with almost all religious traditions such as: compassion and respect for others, humility and harmony, introspection and meditation, as well as love and gratitude. These seem to predict the likelihood of longevity according to Howard Friedman, professor of psychology at University of California – Riverside, and author of The Longevity Project.
Larger studies are showing that individuals with spiritual habits (e.g. meditation, going to church, walking in nature, journaling) also experience health benefits such as:
- Lower levels of depresssion and anxiety
- Lower blood pressure and fewer strokes
- Less risky behaviors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, and drugs
As we all age and face death, finding our meaning of life takes practice. Start your practice by personal meditation, yoga, or joining small groups not associated with a formal church, or journaling with purposeful introspection. Many hint at the power of prayer. I believe in the power of practice, and it starts with you being aware and making an effort.
