Mental fatigue, poor motivation, and draining moods – we laugh it off saying it’s just work projects or crazy kid’s schedules. This is because your brain is desperately trying to get your attention and is communicating to the rest of your body. It is working overtime to stimulate the production of neurotransmitters responsible for making you productive.
But we want MORE productivity at work or restful nights. What are you lacking? Acetylcholine and Dopamine.
First, the brain needs acetylcholine, which is responsible for producing focus, clarity, and memory. One way to accomplish this is through exercise. The benefits of exercise are no secret and well-documented showing improvements in memory, sleep, decision-making and planning. Studies have shown that patients who maintained a healthy level of exercise scored better on tests than those who didn’t exercise. Exercise in any form is specifically aiding the brain’s capacity to learn. After 20-minutes of moderate exercise (running, walking, hiking), cognitive performance and accuracy improved. Also, be cautious of nicotine, which is known to bind to the acetylcholine receptors. This directly impacts the muscle-activating function within the nervous system. Certainly addictive in nature, the poisonous chemical effects are way more harmful at a muscular and neurological level causing degeneration.
Secondly, your brain needs dopamine to maintain good mood levels and have proper motivation. Dopamine is produced from the amino acids found in protein-rich foods such as eggs, nuts, legumes, lean meats, and avocados. While exercise is a great choice, watching what you eat is equally important. You can overcome mental blocks and power through procrastination by stimulating your brain naturally and effectively. It’s a no-brainer, a healthy lifestyle equals a healthy mind.
